First-tattoo planning checklist
6 min read
Planning a first tattoo is mostly a sequence of small decisions. Taking them one at a time removes almost all of the pressure.
Before you contact an artist
Do the thinking that does not need anyone else.
- •Decide what the piece is about, in one sentence
- •Collect reference images of styles you like and styles you do not
- •Pick a rough placement and measure the space
- •Set a budget range and a realistic timeline
- •Wear a temporary version of the design for a few days
Choosing an artist
Look for an artist whose finished, healed work matches the style you want, rather than the artist who is nearest or cheapest. Studios and artists differ widely in specialism.
- •Review a full portfolio, not a single post
- •Ask about hygiene, licensing and aftercare in your country
- •Bring your reference and be open about what you are unsure of
- •Expect the artist to adapt the design to the body, that is part of the craft
Practical details people forget
Small logistics have a real effect on the day.
- •Book enough time, rushing a first session is unpleasant
- •Eat beforehand and wear clothing that exposes the area easily
- •Plan around holidays, swimming and sun exposure while healing
- •Ask what aftercare products the artist recommends before you leave
Where a temporary version fits
Order the design as a custom temporary tattoo, wear it, then decide. Shipping from €4.99. Free shipping on orders of €49.99 or more. Estimated delivery: 15–25 business days after artwork approval. If you have a studio appointment booked, order well ahead of it.
One caveat
This guide is general information about planning, not medical advice. For questions about skin conditions, allergies, healing or aftercare, speak to a qualified professional.
