How to test a tattoo before committing
5 min read
A permanent tattoo is a decision made from a picture on a screen. Wearing the design first turns that decision into something you can actually see on your own skin.
Step one, get the artwork right
Use the real file, not a screenshot of it. PNG, JPG or WEBP, max 25 MB. A transparent PNG is recommended for the best printing results.
Each design is proportionally fitted within the selected size without stretching, distortion or cropping. Depending on the shape of your design, one dimension may be slightly smaller.
Step two, choose a size deliberately
Most people underestimate size on a screen and overestimate it on skin. If you are between two sizes, order both and compare, or measure the area with a ruler before choosing.
Step three, wear it through a normal week
The point of a test is ordinary life, not the first hour.
- •Wear it to work, to the gym and out with friends
- •Photograph it in daylight and in indoor light
- •Notice whether you keep looking at it or stop noticing it
- •Pay attention to how it sits when you move, not just when you pose
Step four, decide what to change
Almost everyone changes something: size, angle, position, or one detail in the design. Write it down, send it to your artist, and test again if the change is significant.
A note on expectations
A temporary tattoo tests appearance and placement. It does not tell you how a permanent tattoo will age, how it will feel, or how your skin will react to permanent ink. Those are questions for a professional tattoo artist.
